Why Backyard Nature Matters

We have a daily impact on one of the most important ecosystems which are right outside our doors — in backyards, balconies, school yards and shared green spaces. Every little thing we do has an impact.

When children are introduced to these small living worlds, they begin to understand how nature works and why it matters.

Children learn how small choices can make a BIG impact wherever they live.

When Children Learn to Notice Nature…

They Begin to Care for it.

Backyard Nature Stories is a brand-new channel just beginning its journey, with new stories and learning activities being added every month.

My goal is simple: to help nurture the next generation of Earth’s caretakers by helping children notice, understand, and appreciate the incredible living world right outside their door.

Today I’m a Master Gardener, and at my home in Reston I’ve built both a rain garden and a conservation garden designed to support pollinators and wildlife.

Through these stories, my hope is to help children develop an early appreciation for the interconnectedness between people, plants, insects, and the natural systems that sustain life on Earth.
